satoru gojo and sukuna in jujutsu kaisen manga

In the fight between Satoru Gojo and Ryomen Sukuna in the manga of Jujutsu Kaisen, after satoru gojo death, fans were left reeling as the seemingly invincible Gojo fell. How did Sukuna pull off this incredible feat? This article explains what led to Gojo’s defeat and how exactly it happened. So, let’s continue.

Gojo vs Sukuna: Beginning of the fight

The battle begins with a surprise attack from Gojo, who launches Hollow Purple at Sukuna. Sukuna, unable to sense the attack despite feeling Gojo’s presence, is caught off guard. This happens because Ijichi’s barrier prevents Sukuna from detecting the immense energy Hollow Purple emits, even when it’s right in front of him.

After the initial attack, they engage in a fierce hand-to-hand fight, with neither gaining the upper hand. It serves as a warm-up for what’s to come. Both then expand their domains. Although the sure-hit effects of their domains overlap and cancel each other out, they are evenly matched only inside the barriers. Sukuna’s “Malevolent Shrine” has a much larger range than Gojo’s “Infinite Void.” This allows Sukuna to attack Gojo’s domain barrier from the outside. Since barriers are weaker from the outside, Sukuna shatters Gojo’s barrier and cuts his neck.

Gojo quickly uses reversed cursed technique to heal. Trapped inside the “Malevolent Shrine,” he starts running, but Sukuna forces him into another close combat. Meanwhile, Gojo suffers several cuts from the sure-hit effect of Sukuna’s domain. During the fight, Gojo realizes that the core of Sukuna’s domain isn’t Sukuna himself but the shrine at its center. To buy time and heal, Gojo uses a simple domain, which is a feat only high-level sorcerers can achieve since it involves manipulating normal and reversed cursed techniques simultaneously.

After healing, they resume hand-to-hand combat. Sukuna then inflicts more cuts on Gojo’s body. Gojo uses a simple domain again, but this time, instead of healing, he uses reversed cursed technique to restore his cursed technique. This confuses the Jujutsu High students watching the fight. Even Sukuna doesn’t understand what Gojo is doing. Taking advantage of this, Gojo launches Cursed Technique Reversal: Red at Sukuna, causing his domain to collapse.

Domain clash second try

He inverts the conditions of his domain barrier, making it weak on the inside and strong on the outside. This prevents Sukuna from easily destroying the barrier from the outside again. Their domains overlap once more, and they start brawling. Sukuna surprises Gojo by using Domain Amplification and Domain Expansion simultaneously, enabling him to use his cursed technique while amplifying it. But Gojo doesn’t falter and lands a powerful punch on Sukuna’s ribs.

Sukuna then grabs Gojo since anyone touching him isn’t affected by “Infinite Void.” With this, Sukuna makes a binding vow by contracting the area of his domain, which increases its power and causes “Infinite Void” to collapse again. Sukuna immediately attacks Gojo with Cleave, but it only causes superficial cuts because Gojo uses Falling Blossom Emotion. This secret anti-domain technique repels any cursed technique that contacts it, countering domain expansions effectively. It’s a good countermeasure against Sukuna’s domain since it relies on simple slashes, and it’s more challenging to overcome than a simple domain.

Gojo’s Triumph

Satoru Gojo's domain barrier with the size of a basketball

Surprisingly, Gojo uses his domain again after two failed attempts. He increases its area significantly, then gradually shrinks it over nine seconds until it’s as small as a basketball. This is possible because of Gojo’s time inside Gokumonkyou, where he was confined in a tiny space

In response, Sukuna shrinks his domain’s effective area even further, increasing its power, and tries to destroy Gojo’s barrier from the outside. Sukuna succeeds in breaking the barrier, but the damage Gojo’s domain inflicts on Sukuna is enough to prevent him from maintaining his domain. This intense exchange lasts for three minutes.

The pattern repeats as they engage in close combat and expand their domains again. Gojo’s strategy becomes clear: he needs to inflict enough damage on Sukuna to disrupt “Malevolent Shrine” within the three minutes it takes Sukuna to destroy “Infinite Void’s” barrier. As they fight inside the domain, Gojo lands several blows on Sukuna, dealing significant damage. However, their domain expansions end simultaneously once more.

They don’t stop there. For the fifth time, they engage in a domain clash. This time, though, Gojo expands his domain just a bit faster, with a difference of less than 0.01 seconds. That was enough for Sukuna to be affected by Unlimited Void, causing Malevolent Shrine to collapse.

Sukuna and Mahoraga

Just as Gojo was about to finish Sukuna, Sukuna summons Mahoraga. The problem for Gojo is that Mahoraga had already adapted to Unlimited Void, even before being summoned. Megumi’s soul had carried Mahoraga’s adaptability using the Ten Shadows, allowing it to adapt without the need for summoning. Sukuna then reveals this was why he wasn’t using domain amplification inside Gojo’s domain.

At this point, Gojo can’t expand his domain anymore. He had already used Reverse Cursed Technique four times, which is extremely dangerous, even once. Knowing this, Sukuna rushes in, ready to expand his domain, thinking the fight is over. However, the 10 seconds he was exposed to Unlimited Void caused enough damage to his brain that it became impossible for him to expand his domain. Gojo takes advantage and strikes Sukuna, unleashing a series of attacks, though Sukuna manages to land a few hits as well. Gojo realizes that with three more spins of Mahoraga’s wheel, it will adapt to Limitless.

The battle continues, and Gojo uses Red on Sukuna, who tries to minimize the damage with domain amplification. Sukuna thinks he’s safe but doesn’t realize the real attack is coming. Gojo had sent the real Red to swing around the building before striking Sukuna by surprise.

This opening allows Gojo to land a Black Flash on Sukuna, who summons Mahoraga again. Now, Gojo must face Mahoraga while Sukuna protects it and creates openings to help the Shikigami. Sukuna uses a fire extinguisher to block Gojo’s vision and then attacks with Piercing Blood, creating an opening for Mahoraga, who lands a hit on Gojo’s arm.

Sukuna and the Merged Beast Agito

Sukuna also summons Merged Beast Agito, turning the fight into a three-against-one brawl. After a tough battle, Mahoraga cuts off one of Gojo’s arms. Just when it seems Gojo is in bad shape, he unleashes a full-power Blue on Merged Beast Agito, finishing it for good and even shocking Sukuna.

Gojo then raises his cursed energy. Sukuna, noticing the level of energy, guesses it’s Red, and he’s right. However, he doesn’t consider that Blue, which had hit Agito, is still active in Mahoraga’s direction. If the Red Gojo is about to throw makes contact with this Blue, something big will happen.

Sukuna tries to stop it with his version of Piercing Blood, but it fails because Gojo uses chants to restore Blue to full strength. As a result, the Piercing Blood is swallowed, and Blue and Red successfully collide, creating a massive explosion. It hits Sukuna, causing immense damage, and best of all, it’s enough to defeat Mahoraga.

Sukuna’s Final Blow

Shortly after everything was going well for Gojo, he was in much better shape. Sukuna was injured and had no Mahoraga to help him. It seemed like only a matter of time before Gojo would win. However, Sukuna used Mahoraga’s logic to attack the space around Gojo.

This time, he used his cursed energy to create a spatial cut that separated Gojo from the world. It only worked because Sukuna made a binding vow, allowing him to use the World Slash without a hand sign. This vow complicated all subsequent uses of this ability. Now, whenever he uses it, he has to make a hand sign, chant, and guide the direction of the slash with a third hand. This restriction was strong enough to split Gojo in half.
