Percival is a life spirit

Percival and his magic

In chapter 116 of the manga, Percival is revealed to be a life spirit. His human vessel was originally a baby, which Ironside claimed belonged to a royal family. This family had suffered a tragic accident when their wagon fell off a cliff. Ironside used forbidden magic to place the life spirit inside the baby’s body. He intended to give this vessel to his son, Diodora, but the plan failed. The life spirit, Percival, gained self-awareness within the vessel, ultimately becoming the Percival we know today.

Percival’s Position inside the four knights

The four knights of the apocalypse

Percival is one of the Four Knights of the Apocalypse, prophesied to bring destruction to the world. He is known as the Knight of Death. However, like the Seven Deadly Sins, this title doesn’t fully reflect who he is. Percival has lost control and briefly taken on an evil form. This happened when he attacked Chion, mummifying his hand because Chion threatened his friends.

Percival’s magic, called Hope, draws strength from the faith others place in him. It first emerged when a villager’s supportive shout helped him turn the tide against Pellegarde. This is a hero-type magical power, meaning it combines various types of magic in the same wielder. This power suits Percival well since he has many friends who believe in him.

Percival's magic golems healing him

Percival can use his magic aura, Hope, to heal himself or others quickly, even bringing himself back to life after seemingly dying in his fight against Ironside.

He can channel Hope into his sword to make his strikes stronger, similar to how he empowers his body, such as when he infuses his fists or feet with magic to strengthen their natural physical capabilities.

Percival's magic golems

Percival can create magical golems that follow his orders and even call him “boss.” These golems seem to have their own minds, as they can talk and communicate with each other. As his power grows, the golems become smarter and more useful. They can even explode. In battle, they coordinate their attacks to trap the enemy or to defend Percival, like turning into a big cushion to save him from getting hurt after a fall.

Percival’s Story

percival from seven deadly sins: the four knights of the apocalypse anime

Percival begins his journey as an energetic boy living with his grandfather, Varghese, on God’s Finger, a towering pillar that rises above the clouds. They led a peaceful life there, hunting and training regularly. One day, his father, Ironside, arrived on behalf of King Arthur. His mission was to eliminate anyone who could become one of the Four Knights of the Apocalypse. When Ironside asked where his grandfather was, the boy naively revealed Varghese’s location. This led to a fight between the two, where Ironside emerged victorious, killing Varghese and attacking his son, though he survived.

Before dying, Varghese urged him to embark on a journey to discover why his father had done such a thing. With a heavy heart, the boy bid farewell to his old home and set out on a new adventure.

After climbing down from God’s Finger, Percival encountered a fox. He tried to speak to it, but the fox ignored him and ran away. As he followed the fox, he stumbled upon three magicians practicing a performance. Amazed by the magic, the young boy praised them since he had never seen anything like it before. One of the magicians, Donny, used magic to levitate him, taking his belongings and running off.

Percival’s New Friends

However, he chased them with incredible speed, retrieved his things, and asked if they knew his father, Ironside. Although they had never heard of him, the boy shared the story of what his father had done to his grandfather. The magicians, moved by his tale, decided to take him to a nearby village, hoping someone there might know Ironside.

When they reached the village, it was under attack by a giant wolf. Percival defeated the creature with a single slap. The villagers began to celebrate, but their joy was cut short by the arrival of Pellegarde, a Knight of Chaos serving King Arthur. A battle ensued, but Pellegarde held back, recognizing the immense potential in the young warrior and wanting to mentor him. Just when things looked bleak, a young boy cheered, giving Percival hope. This encouragement triggered the awakening of his magical power for the first time. Though he didn’t fully understand it or know how to use it, Donny warned that it must be his magic, pushing him to try and harness it.

During the fight, he also summoned magical golems for the first time. The battle came to an end when the fox he had encountered earlier intervened, throwing an incantation orb that teleported them far away to a place called Dragon’s Backbone. There, the fox, Sin, explained everything about the prophecy involving the Four Knights of the Apocalypse and revealed that Percival was one of them. Together with Donny and Sin, he set out for the Kingdom of Liones to continue his quest to find his father.
