Appearance

Yami Yami no mi

The Yami Yami no Mi resembles a spherical dark purple fruit with a swirl pattern common to Devil Fruits. It features a stem and a small, leafy crown on top. Its design reflects its association with darkness, with a foreboding and ominous look. Like all Devil Fruits, consuming it grants unique powers at the cost of the ability to swim.

Abilities

Control Over Darkness

The Yami Yami no Mi lets the user create and control darkness, shown as a thick, almost living black mass. Unlike usual elements controlled by Logia fruits, this darkness acts like a void, similar to a black hole.

This darkness can consume everything it touches, from matter to energy. It draws in objects and attacks, neutralizing them. Blackbeard can spread this darkness over large areas to engulf structures or incapacitate enemies.

Gravitational Properties

The darkness created by the Yami Yami no Mi has unique gravitational effects. Blackbeard can generate a pull strong enough to draw objects, people, and even attacks into the darkness. This gravitational force immobilizes enemies and renders ranged attacks ineffective.

Devil Fruit Nullification

One of the Yami Yami no Mi’s most terrifying abilities is its capacity to nullify the powers of other Devil Fruits. By making physical contact, Teach can suppress any Devil Fruit ability, including Logia intangibility, effectively neutralizing his opponents. This nullification is an extraordinary countermeasure, rendering even the most powerful Devil Fruit users vulnerable. The mechanics of this ability suggest that the darkness “absorbs” the essence of the opposing Devil Fruit’s power, preventing its activation during contact.

Damage Absorption and Amplification

A notable drawback of the Yami Yami no Mi is that its user cannot become intangible like other Logia fruit users. Instead, Blackbeard absorbs all physical damage, and the pain inflicted is amplified. Teach has described this as the fruit’s curse: while the darkness can absorb attacks, the user feels the full brunt of their effects.

Liberation of Absorbed Matter

Blackbeard can release objects and matter previously absorbed into the darkness using a technique called “Liberation.” This ability allows him to expel whatever the darkness has consumed, often with explosive force.

Black Hole

This technique allows the user to spread darkness over a wide area, consuming everything within its range. The darkness functions like an actual black hole, drawing in objects, terrain, and even living beings. Once absorbed, the matter trapped in the darkness is crushed and seemingly obliterated, leaving the area in ruins.

Liberation

After consuming objects and matter with Black Hole, the user can release them violently through the technique known as Liberation. By expelling the absorbed material all at once, the user creates a chaotic and destructive explosion of debris. This technique demonstrates the dual nature of the darkness: it can trap and store matter before turning it into a weapon.

Kurouzu (Black Vortex)

Kurouzu uses the gravity of darkness to pull a target toward the user. The user extends one hand and activates a spiraling pull, dragging the target close. This move works well against Devil Fruit users because it forces them into close contact where their powers can be nullified by touch.

Can the Yami Yami no Mi steal Devil Fruits?

We know Blackbeard can currently use the power of two Devil Fruits: his own, the Yami Yami no Mi, and the Gura Gura no Mi. But how does he do it?

One theory suggests that the Yami Yami no Mi lets Blackbeard trap and extract the essence of Devil Fruits, called their “demonic energy.” Normally, this energy transfers to a new fruit after the user dies. But Blackbeard’s darkness might let him intercept and absorb or redirect this power. This fits with the fruit’s ability to absorb and control matter and energy.

Blackbeard’s unique body and research into Devil Fruits support the Yami Yami no Mi’s abilities. His unusual body might let him eat more than one Devil Fruit without dying. This could explain how he gained Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi

Weaknesses

Amplified Damage Sensitivity

Unlike other Logia users, who can transform into their elemental form to avoid physical harm, the Yami Yami no Mi prevents its user from becoming intangible. Instead, the darkness absorbs attacks, and the user feels the full brunt of every hit. Moreover, the fruit amplifies the pain and severity of each attack. Teach himself calls this the “price of darkness.” This heightened vulnerability makes the user more susceptible to physical injuries and requires exceptional resilience and endurance to cope.

This weakness changes how the Yami Yami no Mi works in combat. While most Logia users can maintain a safe distance and avoid direct damage, Blackbeard must rely on his physical toughness to withstand attacks.

Dependence on Physical Contact for Nullification

One of the Yami Yami no Mi’s most iconic abilities is its power to nullify other Devil Fruits. However, this effect is not passive or automatic—it requires the user to maintain direct physical contact with their opponent. This dependency can expose the user to counterattacks, particularly from adversaries who excel in close-quarters combat. Additionally, touching an enemy who wields weapons or possesses advanced Haki can be extremely dangerous, as the user is unable to avoid harm through intangibility.

This limitation makes the Yami Yami no Mi less effective against highly skilled fighters who can leverage speed or ranged abilities. It forces Teach to engage in close combat, where he must rely on strategy and his physical durability to outlast opponents.

Meaning of the Name “Yami Yami no Mi”

In Japanese, “Yami” (闇) means darkness. Repeating “Yami” in the fruit’s name shows its power to consume everything like a black hole. The “no Mi” (の実) means fruit, which is part of the naming for all Devil Fruits in One Piece. In English, it translates to “Dark-Dark Fruit.” This name fits its ability to create a void-like darkness that can swallow anything.
