Jujutsu Kaisen counts with some powers that needs a lot of context to understand. The Domain Expansion from one of the JJK third years, Kinji Hakari, is a great example of this. His domain, called “Idle Death Gamble” works like a Pachinko machine, linking to his attachment to gambling. Let’s keep going so that you completely understand Hakari’s Domain Expansion.
How Does Hakari’s Domain Expansion Work?
First of all, it’s important to explain why Hakari is trying to hit the jackpot, which means getting three cards with the same number, like a slot machine. When this happens, Hakari gets unlimited cursed energy for four minutes and eleven seconds. During this time, he’s basically immortal because he automatically heals any injury and removes poison with the reverse cursed technique. Also, he gets a boost in speed and strength in this state.
We’ve seen how great it is if Hakari reaches the jackpot. It has smart logic behind it, using restrictions in a clever way to increase his chances. In the image, we see the game flow. The Domain Expansion state depends on how Hakari left it the last time he expanded his domain.
How Hakari’s Visual Indicators works?
Let’s start with Normal Mode as the initial state. In this state, if the first two numbers match, we enter a mode called Reach. In this mode, Hakari grabs one of the Visual Effect Indicators. He has three different indicators to choose from: collected balls, doors, and pseudo-spins. So, what is a Visual Effect Indicator? It appears in his domain before he rolls the “slot machine” and shows how likely it is to get the desired outcome.
If he chooses the collected balls, receiving a green ball means low chances of a jackpot, red means medium chances, and gold means high chances. He can control which indicator to use, but whether it’s good or bad is up to luck. If the first two numbers don’t match, it just restarts.
The scheme also shows the pseudo-spins. Hakari uses them to return to his initial state when he expanded the domain, fixing any damage he took during that time. However, using pseudo-spins decreases his chances of success in the next Visual Effect.
Hakari’s Riichi Scenarios explained
In Reach Mode, the jackpot success depends on whether an anime scenario will succeed or not. It’s literally an anime scene from “CR: Private Pure Love Train,” which exists in the JJK verse. One of four scenarios will happen, and based on the color of your indicator, you’ll have better chances of getting a better Riichi Scenario. The better the Riichi, the higher the chances of the desired jackpot. For example, if Hakari picks the green ball or green door, the lowest chance scenario, called “Transit Card Riichi,” will appear. But if he gets the golden ball, one of the two best scenarios will happen.
In any scenario, to get a jackpot, the main character needs a good ending, like successfully catching a train. If the scenario fails, then the entire process restarts.
How the game flow works in Hakari’s domain expansion?
Hakari’s Domain Expansion also has a game flow. At the start, his domain can activate in one of two modes. The first is Increased Probability Mode, which raises the low jackpot chance of 1/239. This mode has a 75% chance of being triggered, as mentioned in chapter 194. Hakari avoids using his Domain Expansion when this mode isn’t active because it’s too risky. The other mode, “Faster Spins,” is less favorable. It speeds up the spins but keeps the normal 1/239 jackpot chance, which is not what Hakari wants to rely on.
Hakari’s use of his Domain during his fight against Hajime.
Hakari uses his Domain Expansion in his fight against Hajime Kashimo, even before they start fighting, arriving with an active jackpot. The battle begins with a hand-to-hand exchange between them. At one point, Kashimo surprises Hakari and cuts off his arm using the electrical properties of his cursed energy. Since Hakari was in Jackpot mode, he instantly heals his arm. However, his four minutes and eleven seconds of immortality run out, so he expands his Domain again, entering an increased probability mode.
Kashimo, being an intuitive fighter, keeps attacking Hakari even though he has infinite cursed energy during this time. They engage in another close combat, and Hakari gets the “Friday night final train Riichi,” which is a good roll. In this scenario, the character must reach the Shin-Yurigaoka train station without any accidents. The scenario plays out, and Hakari hits another jackpot. Hajime continues to press on, driven by his instincts as a fighter, despite Hakari’s ongoing power.
The brawl resumes, and after Hakari’s immortality runs out, we discover Hajime’s strategy. He accumulates electricity in his hod and attacks Hakari. Since Hakari’s immortality time is up, he can no longer heal, and he suffers a severe rib injury. Desperate, Hakari expands his Domain again, trying for another jackpot. Unfortunately, he lands in the “faster spins” mode, which only gives him a 1/239 chance of success, a bad situation for him. However, by sheer luck, Hakari hits the jackpot again.
He changes the coordinates of his Domain, moving the battle above a sea infested with curses in Tokyo. Hakari clings to a winged curse and rises above the sea while Hajime falls into the water, causing his energy to leak because of its electrical properties.
But Hajime makes a smart move by generating chlorine gas, a deadly toxin, using electrolysis in the water. He believes that Hakari’s reverse cursed technique during Jackpot won’t be enough to remove the toxin, but he is wrong. Hakari clears the toxin and continues punching him. Then, Hajime releases all his cursed energy into the water at once, causing a massive explosion. Hakari’s jackpot time ends, but he survives thanks to a binding vow, sacrificing one of his arms to protect the rest of his body. He emerges from the water and punches Hajime again. Now, with Hajime out of cursed energy and Hakari still standing, Hakari wins the fight.
