Scratchmen Apoo, also called the “Roar of the Sea,” is a pirate captain and musician in One Piece. He leads the On Air Pirates and comes from the Longarm Tribe. Apoo is part of the “Worst Generation,” a group of infamous rookie pirates introduced during the Sabaody Archipelago arc.
Personality
Apoo is sneaky and unpredictable. He looks out for himself more than anyone else. This selfish streak showed when he turned on his allies, Eustass Kid and Basil Hawkins, to join Kaido and the Beasts Pirates. He doesn’t care much about loyalty and prefers siding with whoever benefits him the most.
Apoo loves music. Everything about him, how he talks, moves, and fights, is tied to it. He even mixes music into battle, like a DJ. He uses sound-related gestures and plays instruments with his body.
Appearance
Apoo looks like no one else, partly because of his Longarm Tribe heritage. His arms are extra long and have two elbow joints. He has piano-like teeth, which match his music theme, and his outfits are always colorful. He’s often seen with big headphones or clothing that has symbols for sound and music.
Backstory
Apoo comes from the Grand Line, where many dangerous pirates are born. He’s a Longarm Tribe member, which explains his unusual build. Instead of following rules, he chose a life of piracy. He formed the On Air Pirates, a crew with a love for music and mayhem.
As a rookie, Apoo gained fame with a bounty over 100,000,000 berries. He was introduced as one of the “Supernovas” at the Sabaody Archipelago, putting him in the same league as captains like Monkey D. Luffy and Eustass Kid. During the series’ time skip, he secretly started working for Kaido as a spy. This sneaky move shaped his role later during the Wano Arc.
Devil Fruit and Powers
Apoo ate the Oto Oto no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. It lets him turn parts of his body into instruments. With this power, he creates sound-based attacks that can hurt opponents in surprising ways. His chest becomes a drum that makes explosions. His teeth play notes that send slashing soundwaves. Each attack targets a specific body part. However, his powers only work if the enemy can hear him. Covering their ears or blocking sound can shut down his attacks.
As a Longarm Tribe member, Apoo’s unique arms help him fight. His extra elbows give him an edge in flexibility and range. He combines his Devil Fruit powers with his natural agility, creating a fighting style that’s hard to predict. He also uses his wits to keep a safe distance from stronger foes.
Weaknesses
Apoo’s reliance on sound has its downsides. Enemies who block sound can counter him easily. This weakness has cost him in several battles. He’s also more focused on saving himself than working with others, which hurts his teamwork. His enemies often exploit this flaw to defeat him.
Wano Arc
In Wano, Apoo worked for Kaido and served as an informant for the Beasts Pirates. He fought against the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance, using his sound powers to cause trouble. He injured Luffy and Zoro early on but quickly became a target himself. Kid and others attacked him for his betrayal of their earlier alliance.
Apoo fought in several battles during the raid on Onigashima. He clashed with Zoro, Drake, and Kid but eventually lost. Although defeated, Apoo survived and was last seen after Kaido’s fall. His future is unclear, but his sneaky personality suggests he will find another way to stay in the game.
Relationships
Eustass Kid
Apoo and Kid have a messy relationship full of rivalry and betrayal. They first met at the Sabaody Archipelago, where they almost fought. Instead, they agreed to settle things later in the New World. Afterward, Apoo joined Kid and Basil Hawkins in an alliance to take on the Yonko. But things went south when Apoo revealed he was secretly working for Kaido. His betrayal led to Kaido capturing Kid and Hawkins. Furious, Kid vowed revenge. During the Wano Arc, he attacked Apoo directly. Apoo mocked Kid for trusting pirate alliances, calling them doomed to fail.
Kaido and the Beasts Pirates
Before the Wano Arc, Apoo became a spy and follower of Kaido. He scouted strong fighters for Kaido to recruit by force. Even though he worked for Kaido, Apoo was loyal only to himself. During the raid on Onigashima, he stuck by Kaido but stayed ready to switch sides if things went bad.
Queen
Apoo and Queen had a strange bond. They both loved music, and Queen even called Apoo “brother” during performances. But their friendship didn’t run deep. Queen often put Apoo in danger, like when he gave him the Ice Oni antidote during the raid. This made Apoo a target for the infected. Queen’s actions showed he didn’t fully trust or care about Apoo.
On Air Pirates
Apoo leads the On Air Pirates, a crew that shares his love for music and chaos. They are loyal to him and follow his wild orders, even in dangerous situations. While their bond isn’t deeply explored, his crew does seem to care about his safety in tough moments.
X Drake
Apoo and X Drake don’t get along. Drake hates Apoo, especially after realizing he was a traitor. Apoo also worked against Drake during the Wano Arc when he discovered Drake had betrayed the Beasts Pirates. Their rivalry added to the tension among the Worst Generation during the battle.
