Genthru is a player on Greed Island and the main villain of its arc. He is the leader of a trio called the Bombers, a group infamous for their brutal tactics to steal items and cards from other players.
Personality
Genthru has a confident and calm attitude, often presenting himself as friendly and reasonable. He uses this to gain the trust of others, only to betray them when it serves his goals. This approach makes him unpredictable and dangerous. Despite his calm exterior, he is highly ambitious and willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve his objectives.
Genthru carefully plans his moves. He is intelligent, methodical, and strategic, ensuring that his plans align with the game’s mechanics. His willingness to kill other players without hesitation shows a cold, calculating and sadistic side.
Genthru’s Abilities and Powers
Nen Type
Genthru is a Transmutation-type Nen user. Transmutation allows a person to alter the properties of their aura, which Genthru utilizes to turn his aura into explosive energy. This power forms the foundation of his abilities. He also taps into Emission and Manipulation in some of his abilities, which is not ideal because Manipulation is the opposite of his natural affinity.
Little Flower
Little Flower, or Bomb Touch, is Genthru’s most-used ability. By channeling his aura into his hands, he gives it explosive properties, allowing him to create small but destructive detonations on contact.
This technique is especially dangerous in close-range combat, as even a single touch can cause severe injuries. When aimed at the face, it can irreparably damage vital areas like the eyes, nose, and mouth. Blasts targeting other parts of the body can destroy nerves and muscles, leaving lasting damage.
However, this ability has its limits. Genthru must shield his hands with more aura than he uses for the explosions, reducing their overall power. Observant opponents using Gyo can sometimes predict whether he’s bluffing. To compensate, Genthru can use both hands for Little Flower, but doing so spreads his aura thin. Each blast uses 20% of his aura, and another 25% is needed to shield each hand, leaving only 10% to protect the rest of his body. These trade-offs make Little Flower a tool of both intimidation and careful strategy.
Countdown
Countdown is one of Genthru’s deadliest techniques. By touching someone and saying “Bomber,” he can attach a powerful Nen bomb to them, but this only works if he explains his abilities in detail.
Once the bomb is in place, a timer begins, linked to the target’s pulse. As their heart rate rises, the countdown accelerates, creating a tense situation where panic can lead to a faster detonation. When the timer reaches zero, the bomb causes a massive explosion, much stronger than the blasts from Little Flower.
The only way to deactivate the bomb is for the target to touch Genthru and say, “I caught the Bomber.” However, Genthru doesn’t have to wait for the countdown to finish. He can detonate the bombs early by linking thumbs with Sub and Bara and having all three say “Release” at the same time. This ability relies on a mix of Nen techniques, including Conjuration, Emission, and Manipulation, showing Genthru’s skill in combining these methods effectively.
Another dangerous ability in his arsenal is Remote Detonation. This allows Genthru to activate planted bombs from a distance using his aura. He doesn’t need to be near his targets, giving him more control and allowing him to avoid danger while keeping pressure on his opponents.
Participation in the story
Joining the Alliance
Genthru initially infiltrates an alliance of players led by Nickes, presenting himself as a trustworthy team member. Over several years, he gathers information and positions himself to exploit the group. By secretly placing his Countdown Nen bombs on the alliance members, he ensures he can force their compliance at the right moment. His patience during this time reflects his commitment to long-term plans.
The Betrayal
When the alliance celebrates nearing the completion of their card collection, Genthru reveals his true identity as the Bomber. He activates Countdown on the group, threatening to kill everyone unless they hand over their hard-earned cards. His calm demeanor during this betrayal underscores his ruthless efficiency. When some members resist, Genthru uses his Little Flower ability to dispatch them, including killing Jispa, who attempts to fight back. Once he secures the cards, he and his team kill the remaining players, further cementing their reputation as lethal and untrustworthy opponents.
Confrontations with Tsezguerra
Tsezguerra, a skilled player on Greed Island, becomes one of the main rivals to Genthru and his group. Genthru devises plans to outmaneuver Tsezguerra by using hostages and deceit. At one point, he stages an elaborate ruse, using decoys of Sub and Bara to infiltrate Tsezguerra’s team and steal cards. Despite these efforts, Tsezguerra manages to avoid direct conflict with the Bombers for much of the arc, instead focusing on strengthening his position against them.
Showdown with Gon’s Group
Genthru initially uses his explosive abilities to gain the upper hand, severely injuring Gon during their fight. Despite this, Gon displays immense resolve, enduring Genthru’s attacks to execute a counterstrategy. Killua neutralizes Sub and Bara, ensuring they cannot intervene, while Biscuit offers strategic support. The confrontation ends with Genthru’s defeat after Gon lands a powerful blow, exploiting Genthru’s momentary lapse in control.
Aftermath
Following his loss, Genthru demonstrates an unusual level of concern for his injured teammates. He agrees to negotiate with Gon’s group, handing over cards and ensuring Bara receives healing. This moment shows that, despite his cruelty and ambition, Genthru holds some loyalty to his allies. His defeat allows Gon and his team to progress further in completing the game and marks the end of the Bombers’ reign on Greed Island
