Choso’s Origin

Choso is a special-grade cursed spirit, born from the experimentation of Noritoshi Kamo, one of the most infamous sorcerers in history. Alongside his brothers, Eso and Kechizu, Choso is one of the nine “Death Painting Wombs.” These cursed spirits are half-human, half-cursed beings created by fusing human blood with cursed energy. Because of this, Choso shares both human and cursed characteristics, which makes him a unique force in battles.

He holds a strong bond with his brothers, which is central to his motivation. After their deaths, Choso becomes driven by the desire to avenge them, particularly focusing his anger on Yuji Itadori. This drive influences his decisions early in the story, making him a powerful antagonist.

Is Choso Really Itadori’s Brother?

Choso and Yuji Itadori

Yes, they are, but in a complicated way. Choso believes that Yuji Itadori is his little brother because of the unique connection they share through Kenjaku, a cursed spirit that possesses the ability of hopping from body to body, was once in the form of Noritoshi Kamo when he created the Death Paintings, including Choso and his brothers. Later, Kenjaku took over the body of Kaori Itadori, Yuji’s mother. This strange twist makes Kenjaku both Choso’s father and Yuji’s mother, which is why Choso sees Yuji as his half-brother.

Choso’s sudden memory of Yuji as his sibling during the Shibuya Incident comes from this shared link to Kenjaku. It isn’t based on a real memory but rather on the fact that they both have the same “parent.” Once Choso accepts this connection, he shifts from being Yuji’s enemy to becoming his protective older brother.

This connection might not seem obvious at first, but it makes sense. Choso has the ability to feel the presence of his two brothers, even when they are far away. That’s how he detected their demise at the hands of Nobara the moment it happened. By making these connections, he concluded he can sense the presence of his blood-related brothers. This power activated when he met Yuji, realizing he was also his brother.

Choso’s Personality and Its Evolution

At first, Choso is cold, focused, and driven by his mission to avenge his fallen brothers. He’s willing to do anything to make sure he fulfills this goal, and his strong attachment to family defines him in the early stages of the story, especially during his intense battle with Yuji Itadori. His serious and vengeful side is fully on display in these moments.

However, after his confrontation with Yuji and becoming convinced that Yuji is his brother, Choso’s personality starts to shift. His coldness begins to fade, and he steps into an older brother role, protecting Yuji instead of fighting against him. This newfound bond not only strengthens his loyalty to family but also makes him more empathetic toward humans in general. Realizing he has a human brother brings out a softer, more compassionate side of Choso.

Choso abilities

Choso using piercing blood

Choso’s main power, Blood Manipulation, gives him a lot of different ways to fight. He can control his own blood, and that opens up a bunch of combat options. Here’s a breakdown of his key abilities:

Supernova

Choso creates small blood orbs and shoots them at his enemies. These orbs are quick and hit hard, making them tough to dodge. Plus, he can control more than one at a time, so his attack range gets bigger. The only downside? It drains his blood supply, so in longer fights, this could be a problem.

Flowing Red Scale

This ability lets Choso boost his physical strength by speeding up his blood flow. It makes him faster, stronger, and sharper in close combat, giving him a serious edge. But there’s a catch, if he pushes it too hard, it’ll wear him out and put a strain on his body, which could leave him vulnerable.

Piercing Blood

Choso condenses his blood into a sharp, high-speed projectile. It’s strong enough to pierce through defenses and cause serious damage. The speed and accuracy of this attack make it a reliable go-to in battle. Like Supernova, though, it uses his blood supply, so it’s not something he can keep doing forever.

Convergence

With Convergence, Choso gathers his blood and concentrates it to make his attacks even more powerful. It’s a way to ramp up the damage, adjusting his moves depending on the situation. The downside is that it takes time to gather the blood, leaving him open to attacks while he’s prepping it.

Defensive Blood Barriers

Choso can also form barriers and shields with his blood to protect himself from attacks. These barriers give him solid defense, adding a layer of protection. But just like his other abilities, maintaining these barriers drains his blood, so their strength depends on how much blood he has left.
