Kite’s Personality
Kite is often seen as a stoic, disciplined character with a deep sense of responsibility, particularly toward Gon, the son of his mentor, Ging. He carries himself with a quiet confidence, which comes from years of experience as a seasoned Hunter. Despite his usually calm nature, Kite has moments of intense ferocity, especially when provoked by those who threaten the natural balance or who engage in cruelty. This fierceness is most evident in his interactions with the Chimera Ants, where he takes on a protective role for Gon and Killua, risking his life to ensure their survival.
Kite’s Nen Type and Abilities
As a Conjurer, Kite can summon objects using his aura, and Crazy Slots takes the form of a clown-faced slot machine that conjures different weapons based on a randomly generated number between 1 and 9. However, Kite has no control over which number appears, making his ability highly unpredictable.
Crazy Slots
When Kite activates Crazy Slots, the slot machine appears with a digital face of a clown, and it generates a number based on a random roll. Each number corresponds to a specific weapon that Kite must use, regardless of whether it’s the most suitable for the situation. This randomness adds an element of risk to his battles, as he has to quickly adapt to whatever weapon is summoned. Despite the unpredictability, Kite trusts this system and believes that fate will give him what he needs at the right moment.
Here’s a breakdown of the known weapons associated with some of the Crazy Slots numbers:
Known Slots and Weapons
- Number 2: Scythe (Silent Waltz)
One of Kite’s most iconic weapons is the scythe that appears when the slot machine lands on Number 2. The scythe is massive, with a long, curved blade, giving Kite considerable reach and power. When wielding the scythe, Kite can perform a special technique called Silent Waltz, where he swings the weapon in a wide arc, creating a devastating spinning attack that can wipe out numerous enemies at once. This move has incredible destructive potential, making it useful for large-scale battles or when Kite is surrounded by enemies. - Number 3: Carbine Rifle
Another known weapon conjured by Crazy Slots is the long-barreled Carbine Rifle, which is associated with Number 3. Unlike the scythe, the rifle is a more precise, long-range weapon. Kite uses it for sniping enemies from a distance, delivering powerful, accurate shots. This versatility highlights the randomness of Crazy Slots, one moment he might be wielding a melee weapon, and the next, he’s using a firearm for ranged combat. - Number 4: Mace
Though not as frequently seen in the series, the weapon associated with Number 4 is a large, spiked Mace. This is a heavy, blunt-force weapon used for close-quarters combat. It’s designed to deal immense damage to a single target, crushing bones and armor with sheer brute force.
Kite’s Role in the Story
Kite’s history with Hunter x Hunter goes back to the very beginning, as he’s the character who initially set Gon on his journey to become a Hunter. Kite first met Gon when the boy was just a child, and it was during this encounter that Gon learned his father, Ging, was still alive. Kite shared stories about Ging and planted the seed of curiosity in Gon’s mind, indirectly leading him to take the Hunter Exam years later.
However, Kite doesn’t reappear until the Chimera Ant Arc, one of the most intense and emotionally charged arcs in the series. By this time, Kite has become a seasoned Hunter specializing in ecological research. He is investigating the appearance of the Chimera Ants, a new and deadly species, and brings Gon and Killua along to assist him.
During their mission, they encounter Neferpitou, one of the Royal Guards of the Chimera Ant King, Meruem. Neferpitou proves to be an overwhelmingly powerful opponent, and despite Kite’s skill and experience, he is unable to defeat her. In a heart-wrenching battle, Kite is gravely injured and ultimately killed, but not before fighting fiercely to protect Gon and Killua. His death marks a significant turning point for Gon, whose grief and guilt over Kite’s demise push him toward a path of self-destruction.
Kite’s Resurrection and New Form
Kite’s story doesn’t end with his death, however. Through a bizarre and mysterious process unique to the Chimera Ants, Kite is reborn as a Chimera Ant himself. It allowed him to reincarnate in a new form, albeit with a different body and identity. In his new life, Kite takes on a female Chimera Ant form but retains his memories and personality.
Kite’s Importance to the story of HunterxHunter
Kite’s death has a profound impact on Gon, serving as a catalyst for one of the darkest moments in the series. Gon blames himself for Kite’s demise and becomes consumed with rage and self-hatred, ultimately sacrificing much of his Nen ability and physical health to gain the power to defeat Neferpitou. This descent into darkness highlights Gon’s emotional immaturity and showcases the brutal consequences of his obsession with strength and revenge.
Yet, Kite’s influence on Gon isn’t purely negative. In the aftermath, Kite’s survival in his new form gives Gon hope and a sense of closure. Kite’s continued existence serves as a reminder that even in the harsh world of Hunter x Hunter, life finds a way to persist.
